Her spectacular voice, blending R&B, jazz and soul, combined with her extravagant yet turbulent lifestyle made Amy Winehouse a house hold name during her eight years in the limelight. Her albums Frank and Back to Black led to significant success with countless nominations. Amy was the first British women to win 5 Grammys, including Record of the Year, Best New Artist and Song of the Year. We loved Amy for her remarkable voice and the virtuosity displayed in writing sensational songs. Unfortunately, she died in tragic circumstances at the age of 27 on the 23rd of July, 2011. Her untimely death, at the same age as a few other exceptionally talented artists, was one of the greatest loses to music fans in the 21st century.
After she passed away, her parents opened up the Amy Winehouse Foundation, on the 14th of September, 2011. The Amy Winehouse Foundation aims to prevent the harmful consequences of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. They work to support, inform and inspire disadvantaged and vulnerable young people to help them reach their full potential. The Foundation has 3 core focuses:
“1. To inform and educate young people about the effects of drug and alcohol misuse, as well as to support those seeking help for their problems and those needing on-going support in their recovery
2. To provide support for those most vulnerable, including those who are disadvantaged through circumstance or at high risk of substance misuse.
3. To support the personal development of disadvantaged young people through music.”
The Foundation works alongside other organisations and charities that help donations to be handled with the highest expertise. The program “Amy’s Yard” aims to give young talented individuals an opportunity to succeed in the music industry. To aid this program, they developed Amy’s own studio into a place for young people to get access to professional studio time. The program lasts 14 weeks and aims to provide participants with skills and confidence for a self sustaining career.
